This week on #TubtaNabadda, we discuss initiatives undertaken by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education of Somalia to preserve Somalia’s intangible cultural heritage. We interview Karalyn Monteil, UNESCO Programme Specialist for Culture, about how her organisation is supporting Somalia’s efforts to preserve the country’s intangible cultural heritage. She also details the benefits Somalia can draw from implementing the UNESCO 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which Somalia ratified in 2020. We also interview Abdullrazak Kallinle, advisor to the Somali Academy of Science and Arts (SOMASA), about its role in safeguarding Somalia’s cultural heritage, and why it is important to involve the youth and women in cultural initiatives jointly being implemented by UNESCO and SOMASA.
