Julian Ovenden, “Maria” from West Side Story - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3iZczZnOjA Listen to 1:45, as he ascends to a B flat on “Maria.” Along with expressing nasal resonance and a drop of the palate, this is also a good example of vowel modification, perhaps to an extreme, which will be covered in another episode. Adele, “Hello” Live - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wdgoKLTDLs In general, this song sits in the middle voice, and it can be heard that Adele uses a mouth belt, very strong, powerful, loud, and with a spread mouth to access the notes. Listening through the rest of the song, she uses similar tactics instead of utilizing nasal resonance and the soft palate.…
