India won the toss and elected to bat first,with Yashasvi Jaiswal making a glorious century and batting throughout the day for an unbeaten 179. No other batter scored more than 34 runs.

Five of the six wickets to fall were shared between Rehan Ahmed, Tom Hartley and debutant Shoaib Bashir who tool two, his first Test scalp being that of captain Rohit Sharma.
