Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a plant prevalent in South Asia, and is now cultivated in tropical areas around the world. The rhizome is used as a spice in regional cuisines, and as a coloring agent in food and cosmetics for its yellow-orange color. Protein wasting cachexia occurs from metabolically active cancer and is reduced from Turmeric as are mitochondria metabolism. Patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder is found in six of six clinical trials to improve with Turmeric and is most effective in middle aged adults and utilized for long periods of time. Mood enhancement is noted in the elderly. Anxiety is reduced in five of seven trials. Many pathways are involved such as Gut Biome, Microbial health, Neural Plasticity, Blood Brain Barrier, Immune System and Hormones. Liver Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase is controlled with Turmeric during paracetamol overdose.
