×A little update from me about the podcast! I’m expecting our second baby boy in just a couple of weeks time, at the time of recording this podcast (he is due mid to late July), and I’ve decided this time round to take a break from the podcast. I’m intending to take the first six to 12 months of baby-to-be’s life a little slower with work than I did with our first-born son (who is now almost 22 months old). One of the tasks that felt most stressful and hardest during that first year of my first-born son’s life was finding both the time and creativity to produce weekly longer form content - which is this podcast. So this time round, I’m giving myself permission to take a break from the podcast! I haven’t decided when I will start it back up with new episodes, but of course, you’ll be the first to know. I’ll still be supporting solopreneurs and small business owners via my online course and resources, which you can explore at emilyosmond.com/programs and I’ll be staying active on my Instagram at @emilyosmond, along with continuing to speak at and host events. So for now, it’s “see you later” to the podcast - and until we speak next, stay well, stay happy and remember: connection over perfection, you’ve got this and we’ll speak soon! In this episode, I speak with Christine Davies: a Masters-qualified holistic psychotherapist who supports women to be well in their body, mind and soul, and who is based in the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. We discuss the evolution of her business - Woven Holistic Counselling, which Christine started inspired by her own mental health journey and subsequent personal growth through the use of holistic modalities. Christine and I explore the marketing strategies that have supported her, specifically bringing herself into her marketing through video, even when it felt like an incredibly scary and uncomfortable thing to do at the start (which perhaps you can relate to), along with the power of building real-life connections to attract clients. We also discuss how Christine continues to intentionally structure her business to support her own well-being. I have had the absolute pleasure of working with Christine through my membership The Modern Marketing Collective and a couple of my Elevate business retreats and it has been so rewarding for me personally to see someone who has such drive and commitment to their work, as is as gifted as Christine, to continue to expand her marketing skills and confidence and evolve her business. If you're like most entrepreneurs then there are loads of things that you could teach and that you could help people with, which means that when it comes to creating our first online course, you could create an all encompassing course or even a membership that covers all the bases and all aspects of our area of expertise. However, in today’s episode, I want to share with you why starting your online course journey with a smaller, lower priced, and more specific course can be a really smart way to go, with five key elements to consider. Timestamps: 00:00: Starting with a Smaller, More Specific Course 04:36: Selling on Evergreen 09:19: More Satisfied Customers and Increased Word-of-Mouth 13:28: Strategic Approach to Course Creation Takeaways: Creating a smaller, more specific course allows for quicker creation and learning about course creation, marketing, selling, and delivery. Smaller, more specific courses have a shorter decision-making process for the audience, making it easier for them to buy. These courses are easier to sell on Evergreen, allowing for consistent sales without relying on big launch events. Shorter courses enable quicker feedback gathering and improvement, leading to more satisfied customers and increased word-of-mouth. Starting with a smaller course doesn't limit future expansion and the opportunity to offer upsells, cross-sells, and additional courses.…

It’s tempting to want to share everything we know in our online course. We can also equate quantity of content with quality of course. But what is in fact more valuable than more information? Quicker results. People don’t want to buy a library of information. They want the fastest route to the course’s promised outcome. In this episode, we’re exploring how to decide how much to include in your course, and how doing this purposefully will accelerate your students’ results. I also step you through the actual step by step process I’ve mapped out for my new online course to teach my students and help them get results. Timestamps: 00:00: Deciding How Much to Include in Your Online Course 04:18: Removing the Noise: Focusing on Actions and Implementation 09:00: Validating Your Course Idea Before Creating Extensive Content 13:18: Taking Action in Designing and Launching Your Course Takeaways: Focus on the fastest route to the course's promised outcome rather than overwhelming students with excessive information. Create a step-by-step process that organizes the course content and provides clarity for students. Think about the key steps that students need to take to go from their starting point (A) to the desired outcome (B). Remove unnecessary content and keep the course focused on actions and implementation. Give creative names to the steps in the course process. Iterate and tweak the course process based on feedback from students. Design the course to be practical and provide clear instructions for implementation. Consider using a platform like Kajabi for course setup and infrastructure. Validate the course idea before creating extensive content. Learn from students and iterate the course to create the best version that gets results. Take action in designing and launching the course. Today we’re exploring arguably the most important decision you will make when it comes to designing your online course. And this is becoming very clear and specific about the person, problem and solution of your online course. When I take a look at the students I have worked with to launch their own courses, those who have had the most success, and have been able to sell their courses the most easily and frequently, have had one thing in common: They target a specific person to solve a specific problem. It’s easy to think that the broader our course is, and the more people it is relevant to, then the more of it we will sell. But in fact, the opposite is true. And the case study in this episode will show you why. In this episode, I’ll step you through how to pinpoint the problem and solution that your course delivers on. So let’s get started! Timestamps: 00:00: The Power of Targeting a Specific Problem and Solution 05:04: Not a Lot of People Get Through Online Courses 10:57: Creating an Entry Point with an Introductory Offer Takeaways: The success of online courses is often tied to targeting a specific type of person to solve a specific type of problem. Specificity sells, and vagueness doesn't. Being clear and specific about the problem and solution of an online course is crucial. Going deeper on one thing and focusing on a specific problem can lead to better results and higher course sales. Creating an entry point into a business through an introductory offer can help with marketing cut-through and guide customers to other offers. It's important to describe the problem that your course solves and the result it helps students achieve in a simple phrase. Have you been thinking about creating and launching your first online course ? There can be a lot to get your head around from the sales pages, the checkout pages, emailing your list, promoting on social media, the course creation, picking a name and price and the launch strategy itself. But if you're like many of the course creators I work with, there can also feel like there's a huge pressure to have a 'big' launch and enrol the most number of students possible.. or else it's a 'fail'. In this episode, I'm explaining why the purpose of your first course launch isn’t about the money it makes . Instead: it is to create the course content with the input of your first intake of students. When you do this, you ensure your course gets results and happy students and testimonials to propel future sales of your course. Click play to find out how this approach will grow your future course sales more than anything else. Coming up with content ideas - and then bringing them to life - is one of the trickiest and most time consuming parts of marketing for one person business owners. But what’s worse? When all that time and effort translates into very little engagement. I remember when I used to rack my brain trying to figure out what to post. At the start, I tried sharing what I saw others sharing - convinced they must know something I didn’t. It wasn’t until I actually studied the type of content that I engaged with myself, that I started attracting above average engagement rates on my content, and grew an audience of 20k+ on Instagram.…

Mindset - or more specifically working on our mindset - is a common idea to many one person business owners. As entrepreneurial people, many of us are focussed on self improvement, self development and continuing to evolve and grow personally as well as professionally. We consume resources - like podcasts, books, and courses - that focus on mindset, which help us to understand our own mindset challenges. And while there are benefits to this - it also means that it can become almost instinctive to link any hesitation or resistance that we have towards an idea, a change, or a decision to a need to work on our mindset. In this episode, I explore how to tap into your own personal values, to make decisions with more confidence, and build a more fulfilling business for you.…

Most small business owners think their marketing should feel new and exciting to them in order to be doing it right . In fact, they think that if they repeat themselves in their content, they're doing it wrong . But when we market our business to suit our personal needs of fun, newness and change, we forget about our audience and their needs of consistency and repetition from a brand. In this episode, I explore three of the mistakes we make that lead us to resist doing what works - i.e. repetition - in our marketing, and I share how we can harness repetition for more reliable business success. There’s a great little feature on Instagram that you might not yet be aware of - or if you are aware of it, you may not be using it in the most strategic way possible. I’m talking about Instagram’s pinned posts feature. You can pin up to three of your posts to the top of your profile on Instagram, which means that these are the first pieces of content that people will see when they land on your profile. So what content exactly should you be considering pinning there? That’s what we’re exploring in today’s episode! I’m not going to sugarcoat it: I have found the past few months pretty hard! The last episode I recorded about business and a baby was when Lando was four months old. He had slept for a lot of the day up until about three months, and at the time I recorded that episode, I was getting to grips with no longer having pockets of my day to dive into work. This coincided with the end of the time that I had prepared for taking my own version of maternity leave - about three months. With Lando due in September, I had most of my content planned until the rest of the year, podcast episodes relatively organised with some re-casts happening, and with December typically being a quieter month in my business each year, I thought I would hit the ground running in January. Well in this episode, I discuss how exactly that plan went and what I have found best and hardest about the past few months, with Lando almost one year old now. Some of the really valuable insights that I teach inside the Modern Marketing Collective centre around four categories of content that every business needs. These are connection, credibility, value and promotion, and today I’m talking about how to apply each of these specifically to your website. Understanding these four categories will be super helpful for everything marketing related, from posting on Instagram and creating your newsletter to how you structure your offerings and content across your entire business. CONNECTION Connection is all about building loyalty and likeability. Research shows that 86% of consumers say that authenticity is a key factor when deciding what brands they like and support. This means that it’s really important to show people who you are so they can see who is behind the business. The ‘About’ page is one of the most visited pages of websites, which gives you an opportunity to bring yourself into your brand and build connection with your audience. If you haven’t already, make sure you include a photo of yourself and tell people a little bit about what you value. This is one of the amazing benefits that small business has, as opposed to larger corporations, because you can really build your unique personality into the business. CREDIBILITY Building trust is huge when it comes to building community and ultimately, making sales. 70% of people will trust a recommendation from someone that they don't even know, which means that awards, testimonials, case studies, reviews, and media features are really, really powerful. You might already have some of these included on your website, and if you don’t, start gathering some of these items and start weaving them throughout your website. You can get quite intentional and specific here in terms of boosting your credibility when it comes to the different pages on your website. For example, I have podcast reviews and statistics on the ‘Podcast’ page on my website, which helps build credibility for my show. VALUE This category is all about understanding how to craft your message and make it crystal clear the transformation you offer, the problems you solve and the solutions you provide to your audience. Think about how you can showcase the value that your business brings. Messaging is absolutely key because it’s something you apply everywhere, from social media to emails, your bio to your website content. Establishing the right messaging can be a challenge, but when you are able to simplify and break it down to make it really clear, your audience will know exactly what you are offering and how you can help them. PROMOTION I like to think of selling as an invitation and this is something you should absolutely be including all throughout your website. Don’t have any dead ends on your website! Be really intentional about what pages you are linking people to. What is the next step in their customer journey? Make it really clear and explicit through your language and also the layout of your website. Your services and offerings aren’t going to be for everyone, but by crafting a website that truly shows who you are, what you are offering and exactly how you can help people, you are setting the scene to help build trust and the demand for what you have to offer. Building out your email list continues to be one of the most fundamental ways to grow your online business. Communicating with people through regular newsletters helps to build trust and draw people into your world. But email addresses are a high commodity and a lot of people are wary of giving out their details. Today I’m talking about 9 elements to consider when creating your opt-in page so that your freebie actually works for your business to create conversions. WHAT EXACTLY IS AN OPT-IN PAGE? You may have heard of the term lead magnet, which is usually a freebie that people can get access to. The opt-in page is where someone can pop in their email address in order to obtain the lead magnet. The goal is to make sure that you are maximising the results for your business from that page. Here are some ways to do it. CAN I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE? The first point to consider is having a bold headline that grabs the attention of your target audience. It’s important to be really clear here about exactly what your promise is and what it is that you’re providing. Underneath the headline, include a subheading to give a little more detail about what you’re providing. Explain the benefits of WHY someone should want this freebie. How will it help them and what problems will it solve? Next is the call to action. This is the button people actually click to download the lead magnet. Make sure this is bright or in a high contrast colour so that it’s really obvious what people need to do in order to obtain your freebie. And be creative with the copy here. Make it really clear and enticing, like “Yes, give me it now!” WE LIVE IN A WORLD OF DISTRACTIONS. KEEP IT SIMPLE It’s tempting to want to include every little detail and loads of graphics on a page, but most of the time, less is more. Keep your opt-in page really simple so that you can minimise, or even better, completely eliminate, distractions. You just want to provide one really clear action for people to take, which is to submit the form and opt-in. In terms of the actual form, keep this simple too. People don’t want to spend a lot of time filling out details so my advice is to stick to the bare minimum. This might vary depending on the needs of your business, but in a lot of cases, a simple first name and email address will do. COMMUNICATING THROUGH IMAGERY AND CLIENT TESTIMONIALS Think about how you can illustrate or represent your lead magnet through the imagery on the page. Make it tangible so that people can visualise what they’re going to get when they opt-in. A bonus tip here is to make sure you create a level of consistency with your website aesthetics, ensuring that it makes sense with your brand instead of being really different or unexpected. This helps to build trust with your audience and leaves no surprises which might turn them away. Another way you can really build trust and help people understand what your offer will provide is to include social proof through the form of reviews, comments and feedback you’ve received in the past. Social proof can be so powerful because it helps people see that other people trust you. It shows them that someone else opted in and had a good experience, which means they will too. WHAT IS THE DATA SAYING? When it comes to marketing, everything is iterative. Have a look at the statistics behind your opt-in page to see what the opt-in rate is. Think about how you can make it better and what you could do to create even more conversions. This is where you can test, refine and tweak the page to find out what works and what doesn’t work. Remember, keep it simple and do one thing at a time so you can really collect data on what is helping. The most important thing is to put your offer out there, instead of holding yourself back while you aim for perfection. Connection over perfection is what it's all about! Today, I wanted to chat with you about something that I know many of us struggle with - imposter syndrome. ARE YOU FEELING LIKE YOU’RE JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH? I’ve definitely struggled with this during my career. It's that awful feeling of self-doubt and inadequacy that creeps up on you when you're trying to achieve something new or step outside of your comfort zone. You might feel like you either don't deserve the opportunity or success you've achieved or that someone is going to find out that you're not as good as they think you are. IT’S A PART OF THE ENTREPRENEUR’S JOURNEY Entrepreneurs face imposter syndrome no matter where they are in their business journey. We're always pushing ourselves to create, take risks, build something new, and stand out. It's so easy to feel like we're not good enough, not qualified or not experienced enough to do all of that. YOU ARE NOT ALONE Now I want to remind you, you are not alone in this feeling and it absolutely doesn't mean that you're not capable of achieving your goals. In fact, imposter syndrome can actually be a sign that you're doing something right. It means that you're pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and trying new things – as long as you’re not letting it stop you in your tracks. REFRAME YOUR THINKING I’ll take you through a simple mindset shift that I have used to help reframe my feelings surrounding imposter syndrome to start taking advantage of every opportunity and make those leaps forward. Remember, imposter syndrome is only a feeling and not your reality. Don't let it hold you back from achieving your dreams and creating something amazing. Keep pushing yourself, learning, and growing. IT’S TIME TO ELEVATE! I’m also sharing some very exciting news about the new Elevate Business Retreat coming up! So make sure you stay tuned in to hear all of the super exciting details! My guest today is Sara Jade, owner and founder of SJ&Co, a boutique hair salon in Northcote, Melbourne. Having been in business for 15 years, Sara Jade has so much insight and wisdom when it comes to business. She has taken her salon to the next level by reimagining, simplifying, downsizing and getting really clear on what she wants. LETTING GO OF HER EGO TO MAXIMISE HER HAPPINESS At the peak of her business, SJ&Co had 14 staff but Sara Jade was constantly drowning in debt from paying wages and the cost of product wastage. With the help of a business coach, Sara Jade stepped back to analyse her business and realised that the biggest thing to let go of was her ego. Once she let go of the need to prove that she was successful, Sara Jade was able to completely simplify her business down to two staff, putting her back on the tools and doing what she loves most. By taking away everything that wasn’t working, what remains now for Sara Jade is a thriving, simplified business and life. A REMINDER OF CONNECTION OVER PERFECTION Not only is she my hairdresser, but Sara Jade is also a member of the Modern Marketing Collective. Sara shares how diligently working through the modules gave her the confidence to back herself and focus on connection with her clients instead of trying to do everything she thought she had to do. INTENTIONAL DECISIONS AND TAKING RISKS A hair salon is quite a traditional business, so when Sara Jade decided to replace the receptionist role with her own app, it came as a surprise to a few customers. But, Sara Jade knew that the most important thing was to serve her ideal clients in the best possible way. A lot of Sara Jade’s clientele are busy CEOs and CFOs so she opened her books to accommodate early morning appointments and made booking simple. She also created an account with two local cafes so clients can pre-order a coffee instead of her having to spend precious time in the kitchen. Another huge change Sara Jade made to her business was removing apprentices and focusing on colours and no longer prioritising cuts. These creative changes were risky for the industry, but this iteration of the salon has not only simplified Sara Jade’s life but also enables her to provide an amazing service to her clientele. YOUR BUSINESS ISN’T FOR EVERYONE…AND THAT’S OKAY! If you’re a business owner and thinking about downsizing or simplifying your business, you might have some fears or concerns around how to go about it. And perhaps you’re wondering if people would respond well to the changes that you make. The truth is, your business isn’t for everyone and that’s okay! One thing Sarah Jade has done so well is understanding what works best for her and implementing some really creative and somewhat drastic changes to her business to make it work. When you service your people, you attract more of your people and that’s how you build your brand. Today I'm joined by Tanya Castellino, the founder of Life's Little Celebrations and member of The Modern Marketing Collective. Her business has promoted and supported kids' event vendors for the past 12 years and during this time, she has launched the Celebrate Society Membership for Kids Party Suppliers , the Celebrate Conference , and a magazine called Celebrating Little Ones . SHE LAUNCHED A MAGAZINE? TELL ME MORE! Celebrating Little Ones is a FREE online magazine that brings together the best party vendors, party products, real party features, interviews and more for kids' parties. This is THE kid's party magazine in Australia, solely focusing on children’s celebrations. WHAT DOES A MEMBERSHIP FOR KIDS' PARTY VENDORS INCLUDE? Life’s Little Celebrations offers membership and network for vendors in the kids' party industry and small business owners who provide products or services for kids' celebrations and offer them amazing support and a really connected network. Tanya has had her business featured in publications such as Donna Hay Magazine and The Practical Parenting Magazine, and she's also been chosen as a judge for the Party Stylist of the Year Awards. TANYA’S JOURNEY We chat about what it's like running a membership, how she manages that one, what's involved, and how her business has evolved over the years from starting as a blog to the online resources and now, as the membership, the conference and the magazine. We also discuss how Tanya has made this work as she has raised her four young children, the challenges that she's had along the way, her advice to others that are looking to build their own successful businesses and what's next for her. BALANCING RUNNING A BUSINESS AND MOTHERHOOD Tanya is a mother of four and lives in Sydney. Tanya previously worked in human resource management and secondary teaching before becoming a mum and delving into the much more exciting world of kids' events. Being a mother and an entrepreneur can be both rewarding and extremely challenging. Finding the right balance between these two roles can sometimes feel like a juggling act and Tanya shares with us how she has built such an incredible business with the support of her family. She set realistic expectations for herself and her business and understood that you can’t do everything all at once and it’s okay to ask for help. There may be times when you have to prioritise one role over the other and that’s when Mum Guilt will often rear its head but if you chat to your kids about why you’re busy running your business you can instil in them amazing values and inspiration of running their own business one day. REMEMBER TO BE PRESENT I learned so much from this conversation with Tanya. Try to remember how precious our time is. If you’re with your family or working in your business, try to be fully present and engaged. I know it’s easy to feel guilty that you’re not working full time in your business and answering every email immediately, or not spending every evening with your children but you’re only one person and you’re doing an incredible job so give yourself a break! I have something a little bit different for you this week where I swapped seats and was the guest on the Heart-Centred Business Podcast with host Tash Corbin. Tash is amazing and a friend of mine. I met her a few years ago at Denise Duffield Thomas's first ever Rose Farm retreat, and I just have so much respect for her. Tash is a marketing and business growth specialist, and she's also one of our members in The Modern Marketing Collective. INSTAGRAM: A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR BUSINESS Social media has revolutionised the way businesses connect with their customers, and Instagram has emerged as a powerhouse platform for brands to showcase their products, services, engage with their audience, make connections and generate sales. Instagram is such a valuable platform for businesses to grow their presence and achieve their marketing goals. Listen in as I discuss with Tash how the value Instagram can offer business owners and share my own strategies to improve connection, promotion, engagement and sales. AVOID COMMON MISTAKES However, like any social media platform, there is the risk of comparisonitis, trying to copy strategies, following brand ideas that don’t resonate with you, or feeling pressure to post huge amounts of content. I’ll take you through how you can gain traction with only a handful of posts and use the algorithms to your advantage. CONTENT CONTENT CONTENT Focus your posts on four types of key content: connection, credibility, value and promotion. What is your audience going to get out of your content? What can you do to delight or inspire them with your own unique knowledge, advice and experience? You’ll set your business up with a fabulous following if you address these key types of content. LEVERAGING AND SCALABILITY I share my own journey from where I started doing a whole mixture of things like copywriting, contracts, and strategy sessions before changing my business model to one that works for me. I talk about my own journey scaling my business so I could create space and time in my life with a business that worked around my own needs and goals. BUSINESS TAKING THE BACKSEAT Tash and I talk about how the birth of my newborn son impacted how I run my business. I needed to give myself headspace and time. I’m keeping myself flexible and adaptable by working out how to shrink and expand different parts of the pie depending on what’s going on in life and what’s going on in the business. We explore how Tash’s health journey led her to needing eight months away from her business and doing the bare minimum. She shares how she kept her business running during that hectic time and how she has built herself back up again. As a business owner, you may feel guilty about taking a step back from your business, whether it's for personal reasons, health concerns, or simply needing a break. You may worry that you're letting your business and your team down or that it reflects poorly on your abilities as a leader. But here's the truth: taking care of yourself is not only essential for your well-being but also for the success of your business. Taking a step back from your business can actually be beneficial in the long run. It allows you to recharge, gain fresh perspectives, and come back with renewed energy and creativity. It can also help you delegate tasks to your team, foster their growth and development, and build a more resilient and sustainable business. Remember, you’re not solely defined by your business. Give yourself grace and permission to take a step back when needed without feeling guilty. In life, you have to focus on what feels good for YOU. Don’t be tempted to compare yourself to others. When you run a business, you’re so privileged to be able to build a business in a way that suits your goals and life and when you need to take a step back, you can decide how that will look and how and when you’ll return. We talk about how Melissa and Nick have implemented the strategies they discuss in Time Magic, their schedules, and the importance of being intentional. BECOMING A MOTHER Having recently become a mother to their beautiful daughter, Bambi, Melissa shares how her journey into motherhood has changed her life, what her schedule looks like now and how she continues to implement strategies in Time Magic in a sustainable way. She shares how her priorities have changed, the need to adjust her expectation on herself when you become a mother and the importance of being present. What we believe about ourselves and our potential to earn profit is important, and more often than not translates straight to our bottom line. While it can be challenging to change up the patterns we’ve always lived with, viewing money from a positive mindset is a skill that anyone can learn. It’s never too late to make a change and begin creating profit with intention and the belief that good things are coming your way. WELCOME CLARE WOOD Today I chat with Clare Wood, qualified accountant turned money mentor and first-time author. Clare helps business owners to massively scale their profits through the power of money management and the concepts of money mindset. She teaches that our beliefs and past experiences with money ultimately affect how we act in business, and in her book Intentional Profit , Clare aims to inspire people to master their mindset for a wildly wealthy business. In our conversation, Clare defines intentional profit and shares some of the money mindset challenges that she continues to experience in her own life. She shares how she continues to work through them, and her thoughts around building a business that will continue to grow month upon month, and year by year. DREAMING BIG Despite creating some amazing successes in her business, Clare has never seen herself as someone extraordinary. She’s just someone who had a big dream and decided to chase it. Sharing the journey that brought her dreams into reality, Clare encourages us to take inspired and aligned actions to move us closer to the things we want. MONEY MINDSET Ten years ago, Clare’s life looked completely different. She was far from achieving the goals she had in mind, and didn’t even know what money mindset was. However, through educating herself and learning the skills required to shift her thinking, Clare started to see her dreams become a reality. She reminds us that we can start to create the life that we want when we believe positive things are coming for us, and take action to make change happen. LEANING INTO INTENTIONAL PROFIT When it comes to investing, there are no guarantees that things will work out. There can be a lot of fear around taking a risk. Having experienced many disappointments in her own business journey, Claire now sees losses as catalysts for learning and growth. She discusses how reframing failure as part of success will cause us to lean into creating profit with intention and confidence. Clare believes in pushing through the discomfort, knowing that what’s on the other side is potentially even bigger and better than expected. The path to success and achieving your dreams is not linear, and every business experiences cycles of loss and gain. However, Clare knows from her own experience that changing our learned, problematic patterns around money will set us free from our fear of failure and release us into our potential. There’s power in doing money mindset work, and I know that Clare’s wisdom will inspire you to step out and implement the strategies that will create the business and the life you’ve been dreaming of. Leaving your 9 to 5 to pursue a creative dream full-time may sound a little out there. Some people may even call it crazy. But when you know what you want and you know what you’re good at, it can work. All you need is a little faith. WELCOME TRISH BURTON Today I sit down with Trish Burton, who courageously walked away from her job as a school teacher to follow her passion for making art. Trish is now a Melbourne-based artist, designer and art educator with a dedication to inspiring creativity in others and creating works that evoke personal connections. In our conversation, we discuss the rigidity that came with school teaching and how it no longer worked for Trish. She wanted freedom and knew she could get more out of life. This realisation led her to take the leap of faith into creating a life she really wanted and starting her own creative business. NICHING DOWN TO FOLLOW YOUR PASSION While Trish found stability and grew her business through corporate graphic design, she eventually made the decision to let go and pursue the work she was truly passionate about. Trish shares how she turned her world upside down to niche down on illustration, and we discuss how putting out what you really love into the world will bring the work to you. GETTING RID OF NEGATIVE SELF-TALK Trish is an optimist, with a wonderful mindset and strong self-belief. However, her self-talk wasn’t always positive, and Trish discusses how reframing things and recognising the wins along the way changed how she saw herself and her work. She’s learnt how to be okay with failure and how to show up in confidence in the face of it. LEARN BY DOING There’s no ‘right’ way to do business, and sometimes you just have to get stuck in and figure things out along the way. Trish talks about learning from the mistakes as well as the successes, and how feedback can be a catalyst for improvement. We discuss throwing yourself in the ring and how it often has a greater impact than observing from afar. Pursuing a creative passion can feel like chasing a pipe dream. But with the right mindset, strategy and a healthy dose of self-belief, it really is possible. Trish leads by example with her amazing positivity, humour and zest for life. Never taking herself too seriously, Trish shares such valuable insight into growing a business and finding the time to laugh along the way. With all the hard work that comes with building a business, it can quickly feel impossible to juggle work and your personal life in a productive way. And while it’s so exciting to throw everything into creating something of your own, how do you find a balance that allows you to live the life that you’re looking for? WELCOME LAURETTA HAMILTON Today I’m chatting with the wonderful Lauretta Hamilton, who made the leap from working under a franchise model to starting her own birth education business. Lauretta is an acuneedling midwife who helps birthing women and their partners feel prepared for and excited about their births through in-person classes and online sessions. In our conversation, Lauretta shares the backstory on how she made the move to become a business owner, including how she weighed up the pros and cons and got really clear on what she wanted out of life. Lauretta talks about the hopes she has for her business, the struggles she often faces and the practical steps she takes towards continuing growth. BATTLING IMPOSTER SYNDROME So many of us experience imposter syndrome when we step out of our comfort zone, and this certainly was true for Lauretta when it came to creating her own course. We discuss the fears that come up around this, and how to quieten that little voice that tells us we’re not enough. We also talk about shifting our mindset to prioritise connection over perfection. RELEASING THE PRESSURE TO PERFORM For many women, life is not consistent. However, we tend to put so much pressure on ourselves to get it all done perfectly. Lauretta shares the challenges she continues to face as she grows her business while raising a family. We talk about going easy on ourselves when things don’t go to plan and finding solutions that work for our unique situations. FINDING SUPPORT THROUGH OUTSOURCING Lauretta loves so many aspects of running a business that she’s often tempted to wear all the hats. However, making the investment to work with a virtual assistant has freed up so much of her time and relieves her of that mental load. Lauretta encourages us to get help where we can so that we can achieve the work/life balance we’re all searching for. We’re all on our own unique journey, and there’s no one way to successfully build a business. Lauretta’s honesty about where she’s at is a beautiful reminder that while we all struggle to make it work at times, our love for what we do will keep us going. Leaving a full-time job to start your own business is a huge decision that is both exciting and terrifying at the same time. It takes so much courage to take that leap of faith and pursue your entrepreneurial dreams but it can be so rewarding and fulfilling. WELCOME CASS AGGETT In this episode, I’m chatting with Cass Aggett who bravely made this leap and started her own web design business after a career as a public servant. Cass helps female founders of health and wellness businesses to showcase the expertise through a strategic website and aligned branding. In this conversation we discuss how Cass has evolved her business over time, where she started, the types of offerings that she started out with, and how these have evolved and grown. Cass shares the decisions made behind choosing where to place her focus, as well as finding her ideal client. NICHING DOWN TO FIND YOUR IDEAL CLIENTS Through a fluke, early on in her business Cass found that she was working largely with clients in the health and wellness industry and found that she absolutely loved it. She explores how she managed to niche down heavily into this specific industry and was able to then attract more of her ideal clients. TAKING THE LEAP TO WORK IN YOUR BUSINESS FULL TIME Cass also shares what that process has looked like from leaving her public service role to working full time in her business. She discusses the strategies and the planning around her schedule that she's implemented to help her really set herself up to be productive, flexible and happy in her own business. PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION Cass is a serial perfectionist and had to learn that progress is far better than perfection. She advises us to spend our time effectively and get our offerings out there to the world and then we can refine them if needed. Finding the courage to leave your full-time job and start your own business is not an easy task, but it can be one of the most rewarding things you can do. I absolutely loved listening to Cass’ experience and advice. She generously gives us her biggest tips for growing a business so make sure you tune in and listen carefully! Do you have an overly complicated website with multiple offerings? Do you feel pressured to have so many programs, courses and services listed just to keep up with the competition? There are so many parts of running a business that can be challenging, but some of the most common complaints I hear are when business owners feel like they’re drowning in offerings, using pushy sales methods, and completely lost on how to plan for the future. It’s so important to make sure you're selling your product or service in a way that feels authentic and in alignment with you and your brand, while also making it super easy for potential clients to understand and engage with what you have to offer. LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK WITH A CASE STUDY Today’s episode is a case study exploring how Michelle Johns has created a simple business that fits in around her life. Michelle is a leadership coach who supports women to become confident and empowered to successfully lead a team for the first time through a mix of coaching, training and mentoring. INTRODUCING MICHELLE JOHNS Michelle has more than 20 years of experience as a leader in the corporate world and has an extensive background in change management, qualifications in organisational psychology and leadership, and is passionate about bringing more feminine energy into the boardroom. I’ve been working with Michelle in The Modern Marketing Collective and on my retreats and I’m absolutely thrilled to be bringing all of her sage advice and experience to you today to help you simplify your business, structure your offers and find the best way of selling that feels good for you. THE NITTY GRITTY Michelle takes us through how she structures her program, private coaching, group mentoring sessions, and networking. Michelle explains what brings many of her clients to her business. Quite often it comes down to the environment they're working in, many in male dominated industries, and they’re not being heard. Michelle will work together with them to find different strategies to manage those situations. SIMPLIFY YOUR BUSINESS I know that the process of simplifying a business is not always easy. You'll need to let go of non-essential products or services and rethink your marketing and sales strategies to better reflect your vision. You may also need to shift your mindset, as many business owners feel huge pressure to constantly add more features, products, or services in order to keep up with the competition. Michelle takes us through how she simplified her program structure, her overcomplicated website, and her offerings into a much simpler way of doing business and she feels far lighter now. She takes us through her marketing, lead magnets, experimenting, building credibility, and how she makes her business work around everything she enjoys in life. I recommend focusing on what truly matters to your ideal client and what fills you up with light and passion. By simplifying your business, you can create a much better customer experience for everyone involved and sell your products in your own way without feeling pushy or salesy. Listen in to hear Michelle’s journey and how she has built a business she absolutely loves through simplifying, selling her way and using strategic focus to plan for the future. Small business owners often have to wear many hats and juggle so many responsibilities in order to keep their company running smoothly. While we know this can be rewarding, it can also be incredibly overwhelming, especially when trying to balance the day-to-day, time sucking operations with long-term growth, launches and sales strategies. CUE THE ONLINE BUSINESS MANAGER This is where an online business manager can come in. An online business manager, or OBM, is a professional who works remotely to help manage the daily operations of a small business. OBMs can take on a wide range of tasks, from project management and delegation to financial planning and marketing. They act as a bridge between the business owner and the team and contractors working on the business, ensuring that everyone is on the same page and working towards the same goals. INTRODUCING MY ONLINE BUSINESS MANAGER - CAT DUNN Cat Dunn is my online business manager and I actually found her in The Modern Marketing Collective! Cat has spent 14 years across admin, marketing, and communications before starting her own business in 2022. Cat originally began as a virtual assistant before quickly moving into online business management where she is passionate about working with female coaches to help scale their businesses, make more money and impact more lives. Cat describes the difference between a VA and an OBM as the OBM is the architect and the VA is the builder. They work alongside each other and the rest of your team to ensure that everything runs smoothly and you have the space you need to create. DECIDING WHEN TO HIRE So, how do you know if hiring an OBM is right for your small business? Here are a few signs to look out for: You're feeling overwhelmed - If you're struggling to keep up with the demands of running your business, it may be time to bring on some additional support. You're not making progress towards your goals - If you're feeling stuck or like your business isn't growing as quickly as you'd like, an OBM can help you create a roadmap and keep your team on track. You're spending too much time on administrative tasks - As a business owner, your time is valuable. If you're spending too much of it on administrative tasks, an OBM can take those tasks off your plate and free you up to focus on more strategic activities. IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THE RIGHT PERSON AND THE RIGHT FIT Once you've determined that hiring an OBM is the right move for your business, Cat takes us through how to find the right person for the job. Here are a few tips: Look for someone with experience - OBMs come from a variety of backgrounds, but ideally, you want to find someone with experience in your industry or a related field. Check their references - Make sure to speak with past clients and colleagues to get a sense of the candidate's work style and reliability. Set clear expectations - It's important to have a clear understanding of what you expect from your OBM and to communicate those expectations clearly from the outset. Start small - Consider starting with a small project or trial period to make sure the OBM is a good fit before committing to a longer-term contract. HOW TO BE A DREAM CLIENT Cat shares her top tips on how to be a dream client for your OBM to ensure they can be effective and efficient in their role. You need to work together as a team, trust your OBM and provide the framework so you can build a truly rewarding relationship that allows you to focus and grow your business for years to come. Cat only works with clients where she feels she can care about their business as much as they do so I encourage you to find an OBM that truly cares and is passionate about what you do. Hiring an OBM can be a great way to take your small business to the next level. By delegating tasks and streamlining operations, you can free up more time to focus on growing your business and achieving your goals. INTRODUCING EMMA MASLEN Today on the show I’m chatting with the courageous Emma Maslen from Rescue My Resume . Emma helps professional women to achieve their next dream job through amazing, confidence boosting resumes and coaching to nail that dreaded job interview. WHERE IT STARTED Emma started her business 5 years ago and would meet with her clients on a one-on-one capacity in cafes to write their resumes. Then covid hit and she had to change her business structure to move her packages online. She developed her website and packages over time and ended up with an extensive website that wasn’t intuitive and clients had to go to multiple pages to find out what she actually offered. So she had to stop and reflect on what she actually liked working on the most, which was interview coaching. She simplified her packages and now includes everything from resume writing to LinkedIn profiles as well as interview coaching in an easy to find program that helps professional women walk into the interview room feeling confident, upbeat and positive. PRICING EVOLVES OVER TIME Emma definitely experienced imposter syndrome in the beginning of her business. But over time she found confidence in her skills, knowledge and experience and felt empowered. The demand increased for her services and she was working around the clock so she started to regularly increase her prices and has built a powerful business structure that suits her, her family and the life she wants to create. REACH FURTHER Emma was mainly operating through a word-of-mouth marketing structure and then she found The Modern Marketing Collective which helped her market her business to a much greater audience and discover her passion for posting regularly on LinkedIn and using video marketing. She now has a great following and loves posting a mixture of educational posts, testimonials and sales posts in a very organic and authentic way. YOU CAN SAY “NO” Throughout Emma’s business journey she’s learned that sometimes working with a particular kind of client will not be worth the money. She’s in a much better mental state if she doesn’t have to deal with the stress of turning around and working with someone who is incredibly demanding. It’s important to be discerning and find your ideal client to have a positive, successful and rewarding partnership throughout your business relationship. I loved listening to Emma’s journey. If you're looking to improve your resume and interviewing skills, you can work with her in her online Not Just a Resume Template program, or 1:1 via her Resume Rescue, Next Level Career and Job Interview Coaching packages. I encourage you to learn from her triumphs and challenges, marketing strategies, how she maps content, her advice and the experience that has come from running a very successful business for over five years. Welcome to today’s episode, which I know you’re going to love - you'll never have to scratch around for content ideas again! I know that as a business owner, content is often something you feel you should be doing better at, but there is always something demanding your attention isn’t there? So it gets pushed further and further down the pile. And what happens for a lot of business owners is that they tend to just push out snack content - a quote or a quick little video. But that snackable content doesn’t do the same thing as long content - it won’t help you get found and it certainly doesn’t drive your audience to take action. Content that helps drive search engine optimisation (SEO), that serves your audience and shows them you can really help solve their problem is what I like to call meal content. It doesn’t take long to map out what this longer-form content should look like. In this episode, I provide you with the questions you need to ask to work out your content themes and determine your key messages. Doing this will help you meet your customers where they’re at, and move them to where they want to be. This is what helped attract people to come and work with me and it got me to making six and multi-six figures. I share three simple activities that will help you come up with content ideas for your business: Conversations with your customers Do not feel as though you have to reinvent the wheel Headline mining These are three different ways that are really simple for you to continuously find different ideas to create really valuable, longer-form content in your business. The kind of content that showcases your expertise, shows your audience that you understand them and demonstrates you have the solutions that will help. This is content that has longevity - people can search it and it helps build your portfolio of knowledge and expertise. When someone comes across you, they can dive into that and very quickly receive a lot of value. It shows that you understand that you can help them and helps them want to take the next step of working with you. So - without further ado, go you good thing! Dive in and start creating some incredible content for your business. LINKS: Previous episode mentioned: Ep 251 - WTF is ChatGPT?! So what’s it like becoming a mum while you run a business? True answer? It’s so different for everyone, depending on them, their baby, their business and their circumstances. I’m sharing my experience - from preparing for maternity leave, the early days of having a newborn, plus what it’s like now, with a four month old. There are things I’d do differently next time, plus other things that are working really well. And I’ve had many conversations with other parents about how they have managed it or are currently doing it too! I always find the end of the calendar year a time that I move into a reflection period. I like to look back on the year, and pull out learnings about myself and the decisions I have made in my business. I examine what has felt good to me, and what hasn’t. Sometimes this is uncomfortable, but I am learning the importance of sitting in the feelings and pausing, versus moving straight into more action driven by my problem-solving, want-to-be-doing-things brain! I have a belief that my gut feeling - or intuition - never lies to me. Perhaps you have found this to be true for you too? So as you mull over these 10 end of year review questions, perhaps you might like to try using more of what your body (or gut) is telling you, more so than your brain. You might just discover some new realisations - just like I do everytime I pause, tune into my feelings and seek to really understand why I’m feeling them before taking action. Let’s begin!
