Welcome to 𝐀𝐢𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬! In this episode, Dr. Mike Duke, Board Certified Orthodontist, and Nicole Goldfarb, Speech Language Pathologist and Certified Orofacial Myologist, 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲-𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 🫁🦷.
✅ They discuss how 𝐣𝐚𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡.
✅ Dr. DeLuke 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬, 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐡, 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲-𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬, 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬 👧👦. He reviews the 𝐀𝐃𝐀'𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐀𝐎'𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬, with the ADA advocating for a broad approach and the AAO more focused on OSA.
✅ Dr. DeLuke and Nicole explore the 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩-𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, from mouth breathing to OSA, noting that 𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫-𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 😫. The apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) isn't the only important measure, may not always have clinical significance, and should not be the only measure relied on!
✅ They discuss how 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧'𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬 😴, and the importance of recognizing both 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬, as well as 𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧-𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐜𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐬 👀, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞.
✅ Dr. DeLuke and Nicole emphasize that 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩-𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 🧩 and monotherapies aren't enough!
✅ They stress the need to 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡.
✅ They note that 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 🎓, but there are 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬.
✅ 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬, 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐬!💖 Seek providers who understand the airway-orthodontic connection and don't settle for providers who aren't asking about sleep 😴 and breathing 👃.
