For some, the pandemic is but a distant memory - yet for others it is part of their lives forever, a time when they lost someone dear to them. Today 's guest, Martha Greenwald, has created a legacy opportunity for these survivors in her Who We Lost project. Join us as we learn more about how we can all participate.
Notes:
Martha Greenwald is a poet, editor, and experienced educator who founded the non-profit WhoWeLost Project in 2020 as a way to honor those who had died due to the coronavirus. With an emphasis on respecting the mourner as well as the mourned, the original website (www.whowelost.org) has evolved and inspired the anthology Who We Lost: A Portable COVID Memorial. The project is careful to sidestep politics and offers a safe space where comments, judgments, and trolls are never allowed. Both the website and the anthology engage with the audience/reader and asks them to participate in the memorialization, providing writing prompts specific to the experience of losing someone during the timeframe of the pandemic.

Martha’s first book of poetry, Other Prohibited Items, won the Mississippi Review Prize for poetry. She has been a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford and a Pearl Hogrefe Fellow at Iowa State. She’s working on a memoir titled Shiva Bullies, which springs from her father’s tragic death and explores the universality of experiences that haunt those left behind following traumatic loss.
