For the past 17 years, I’ve served as a national speaker and writer focused on the issues of aging, caregiving, and the end of life. And yet, I seemingly have more to say about the Cardinal issues of life—those facets of life of paramount importance. Consequently, I'm delighted to invite you to my virtual kitchen table where we'll chat about what matters most in life. Wondering if my musings are worthy of your time and attention? Well, if you’ve ever wondered and worried about getting older. If you’re concerned about how to answer the call to care for family and friends. If you’re anxious about the prospect of aging solo. If you’re mired in the darkness of your grief. If you’re scared to death of death. If you’re interested in living by design, not by default, then we stand on common ground. We share some common concerns. We definitely have something to chat about! So, what do you say? Care to muse with me? Please note, Cardinal Musings with Jane Barton is an educational podcast. Over the past 2+ years, I have presented many programs on the issue of change and the transition experienced in the aftermath of change. There is certainly no lack of relevant examples of change! Seems as if every aspect of life has changed as a consequence of the global pandemic, financial instability, social and political unrest. But recently, I've been reminded of the changes and transitions associated with the journey of caregiving and aging in general. Several dear friends are currently knee-deep in the trenches of caregiving and/or are dealing with the challenges posed by aging. Thus, they are confronted with significant change at every turn. So the issue is forefront in my mind and heart.…
When have you learned the most about yourself and about life? More than likely, it’s the times of trial and tribulation that informed and influenced your journey the most. Adversity pushes us beyond our previously perceived limits— beyond our comfort zone. No doubt, you’ve learned much over the past few years in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, financial uncertainty, and political and social unrest. In this moment, we have a choice. Do we choose to be diminished by life OR emboldened? Please tune in to explore the afterglow of adversity—the opportunity to rise to the occasion and evolve in wondrous and creative ways!…
How an individual integrates loss into life is certainly a personal challenge. However, when the world experiences a pandemic of loss, the integration of loss becomes a communal experience. How can we courageously companion each other as we collectively grieve and mourn all that has been lost? First, let’s consider the basics of loss and grief. Then, we’ll examine the complicating factors of our current situation. And finally, we’ll highlight beneficial approaches and resources for a grieving community.…
Due to the global pandemic of grief and loss, I want to share some personal stories of loss and the lessons I learned along the way. We’re weary of dealing with life-changing twists and turns each and every day and the subsequent losses. We don’t know what to do with our sorrow, with our sadness, with the gaping voids created by so many heartbreaking losses — individual and collective losses that continue to accumulate. How are we to bear the massive burden of loss experienced in recent years? Perhaps by listening to what I’ve learned about loss over the past 65 years, you will benefit as well. That is my fervent hope.…
Over the past few weeks, I’ve listened to several people who are frustrated by the fact that they’re NOT in control! As I listened, I had to suppress a smile since I’m somewhat of a control freak - to say the VERY least! It drives me CRAZY when life reminds me that the twists and turns of life are beyond my control. Instead, the harsh reality is this - life can change on a dime and does more often than we like. When life HAPPENS, we’re usually shocked, dismayed, fearful, anxious, angry, and ticked off! We feel duped by life. But I’m sure you recall the old adage about the best laid plans of mice and men, right? Doesn’t make it any easier. But at least we can find a morsel of solace in the fact that we’re not alone. Life by its very nature is beyond our control! ARGHHHHHH!!! I like my elusion of control MUCH better!…
Although we live in a death averse society, you have probably thought about how you want your journey to end. If you are like the majority of people in our country, you want to die at home—surrounded by your family and friends. But the sad reality is this—most people don’t get what they want at the end of life. Due to circumstances and the domino effect of acute, aggressive care—far too many people die in the sterile, unfamiliar, dehumanizing environment of an ICU. So, the question is this—How can we reclaim authorship of our ending?…
I love critters - all creatures great and small. Always have. Always will. My family of choice includes cats and dogs. I’m not alone in my love of critters. According to American Pet Products Association, over 60 percent of all households in the United States have a pet. Our love and connection with other creatures is more than a mere physical connection. The human-animal bond is known to be therapeutic in a myriad of ways. So, let’s take a few minutes to chat about the many life-enriching blessings we enjoy - compliments of our animal companions.…
I’ve always marveled at the human capacity to bounce back from adversity. And considering the times in which we live, I’m in absolute AWE of the individual and collective resilience on display each and every day. In fact, resilience is absolutely GRAND! But, what does it take to be resilient? Well, I just happen to have a few ideas about bouncing better.…
Today, I want to chat about our collective longing to feel normal once again. You do remember normal, right? Normal - our standard, usual, typical, and/or expected way of life that far too many of us took for granted before COVID reached our shores last year. Normal - the routine, the mundane, the known, and therefore the somewhat boring rhythm of our days. Normal - a way of being that most of us would give our eye teeth for right now! Oh my gosh! Normal never sounded so good!…
Listening is a Cardinal Concern - a human ability we can hone and refine over the course of a lifetime. I learned how to listen as a young girl by observing my mom. She was a masterful listener who shared her gift with family, friends, and our neighbors. Today, due to our collective experience of COVID, we need courageous, compassionate listeners to bear witness to all we have endured over the past year. Consequently, we are all called to listen.…
Today, I'm delighted to invite you to my virtual kitchen table for a chat! I grew up discussing the Cardinal issues of life with my family around the kitchen table—and I continue to do so. I’ve considered launching this podcast for the past 2 years. So why now? Perhaps it’s because of our collective experience of COVID-19—a tragic and traumatizing situation that has refined our focus on what truly matters in life. The global pandemic is the cosmic 2X4 to the head that has awakened us to what matters most—the things of Cardinal importance. So, let's take advantage of this wake up call. Let's choose to muse about what truly matters instead of obsessing on the minutia of life. Curious as to the topics of conversation? Rest assured, the overarching themes of aging, caregiving, and the end of life present a myriad of concerns for musing. What does it mean to age well? How do we answer the call to care for family and friends? Why is change so hard? How can we become more resilient? Why are we scared to death of death? How do we grieve? Who are we called to be? What are we called to do? How does faith shape our experience of life and death? These are just a few of the questions we'll consider as we muse about the Cardinal issues of life around our virtual kitchen table. So, pour a cup of coffee. Settle into your favorite chair. Take a deep breath. It's time to chat!…
