In today’s episode of Create Space, I welcome Wichita State Senior Educator, Eric Wilson, to the show. Eric is a colleague of mine here in the Elliott School of Communication and an incredible teacher. Something I’ve noticed and admired about Eric is how he pays attention to more than just a student’s grade. He recognizes how important mental wellness is and also how challenging it can be for those of us in the communication industry. He plays an active role in teaching his students how to notice signs of burnout and how to maintain a healthy balance between their personal and professional lives. Eric doesn’t just talk the talk; he also walks the walk. He teaches self-compassion to his students and lives it in his own life, as well. In this episode, Eric will discuss how to foster a resilient mindset, take restorative breaks and manage stress.…

We’re back!! The fall semester is in full swing, and Create Space is back after a beautiful summer spending time at home with my kids. In today’s episode we’re going to make sense of the complex world of contentment. Join me as we explore the power of cognitive behavioral therapy, the concept of morally neutral behaviors, and the intriguing vertical and horizontal morality structures that influence our decision-making processes. We’ll start with a discussion on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a therapeutic approach that empowers people to identify and challenge negative thought patterns. We’ve talked about CBT on the show a few times before and we’ll definitely talk even more about it in later episodes. When it comes to storytelling, the stories we tell ourselves can simply not be understated. Next, I’m going to introduce you to the concept of morally neutral behaviors. This is something I learned from author, KC Davis. We’ll talk about the idea that not all actions are inherently good or bad. Understanding this concept can set you free from guilt and judgment, allowing you to make choices that feel right to you. Finally, we’ll turn to the intriguing concept of vertical and horizontal morality structures. We’ll discuss how vertical morality, often rooted in religious or traditional values, can clash with horizontal morality, which considers individual autonomy and societal progress. This is an episode that’s been on my mind for quite a while now and I’m excited to share it with you! Whether you’re feeling buried under a mountain of unattainable expectations or just wishing you could discover a deeper understanding of your own value system, this episode is for you.…
One of the biggest privileges of hosting this podcast is getting to interview current and former students of the Elliott School of Communication. This is a place that changed me for the better and grew me into the person that I am today and to get to honor that same experience in others is something for which I will be forever grateful. Today, I sat down with local videographer and content creator, Chase Dempsey. I met Chase several years ago as he was completing his undergraduate degree through the Elliott School and he went on to also complete his Master’s in Communication with us as well. Now, he works as a content creator for Bethel College and also runs his own videography company, Chase Me if You Can Productions. Chase creates magic for his clients every single day with his camera and I can’t wait to share his story with you! Want to work with Chase? (Believe me, you do.) In the pilot episode of this podcast, I told you that Create Space is a place where every story is told with radical empathy and compassion. Today, we’re talking about the story of humans and how we came to be. This episode is a discussion and review of the book, Sapiens: A brief history of humankind, by Yuval Noah Herari. Herari is an Israeli philosopher and much of his body of work is related to storytelling and the impact that story has had on humankind. This particular book tells the story of human evolution from a biological and scientific viewpoint. It discusses what makes modern humans different from other animal species, why we have been the exclusive apex predator on earth for 10,000 years and what storytelling has to do with it. This episode is only part 1 as this book is long and detailed. Therefore, in order to give it the time it deserved, I had to break it into two parts. As you prepare to listen, I’d encourage you come in with an open mind that is ready and willing to ponder, wonder, contextualize, and imagine ideas that you may have never considered. Also, remember that this book and my subsequent discussion of it, is all viewed through the contextual lens of the author’s own cognition and experience, as well as my own. None of this is 100% fact or 100% fiction… which is the beauty of storytelling. It’s all about perspective. Enjoy the show? Please subscribe so you don’t miss an episode. This is one of my favorite Create Space conversations to date. Executive Director of Heroes Academy, Kyle Ellison, discusses what it means to take control of the narrative and to write your own story. More specifically, he talks about what that means to a child. Heroes Academy is a youth mentoring program that was built to help break down barriers and empower youth to become the heroes of their own story. Kyle has no problem shaking things up, redefining the rules and rewriting the script… and he’s teaching future generations to do the same. Join me as I provide an insider's look into NAB and BEA, and let’s discuss together what all of this means for the future of the broadcast industry.…
Today is different. The episode is short… less than 10 minutes. Please let this short episode serve as introduction and then go listen to the most recent episode of the Lives of Courage podcast with Jessica Stong. I had a different episode planned for today, but I recognize when a story needs a moment in the sun… when a story comes out that needs to be shared as widely as possible. When a story has the potential to change lives. And when an opportunity like that comes up… you let it. I'm staying true to the name and creating space for something valuable. I’d like to let this week’s episode be an invitation to experience Jessica Stong’s podcast, Lives of Courage. The episode was published on April 28 and its titled “It’s time to talk (about mental health).” Once you’ve listened to that episode – let me know what you thought about it. I’d LOVE to hear your thoughts. Also, subscribe to the Lives of Courage podcast… you won’t regret it.…

This week is part two of our Creative Courage series. Last week we discussed personal shame resilience. Today we’re going to push that resilience outwards into our communities. We’ll discuss the responsibility that we have as creatives to share stories that shed light on the shame epidemic, how to intentionally listen and accept the stories of others and finally how to take responsibility for our own role in creating shame in those around us. This episode is highly-focused on the work of shame researcher, Brene Brown, and more specifically her book I thought it was just me, but it isn’t. Enjoy the show? They say the best way to learn something is to teach it to someone else. That’s where this episode came from. Shame is something I have dealt with forever and it’s been a major hindrance to my creativity in the past. As I’ve been learning from others over the years to work through my own feelings of shame, this episode was born. This is the first of a two-part episode series that I’ve been working on writing for several months now. I questioned myself a lot, rewrote parts of it, and sat on the idea for quite a while… unsure if and when it would actually be released. Well, now is the time to share it with the world! This is an episode called Creative courage: breaking through the shame barrier. We are going to get into what shame is, why it’s so harmful (particularly in the creative community) and how we can fight back with empathy and self-compassion. This episode is rooted in the work of three specific women. Brene Brown (specifically her book “I Thought It Was Just Me, But It Isn’t”) Kristin Neff – a pioneer in the world of self-compassion work Marsha Linehan – Professor Emeritus of the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington and the creator of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy framework (DBT) I’d like to offer a debt of gratitude to all three of these powerhouse women. They’ve been pushing this field forward for decades and it’s a privilege to include their teachings not only in this podcast but also in my life. I will also say that my own, one-on-one therapists have been pivotal in increasing my own shame resilience. I have one therapist I’ve worked with for more than a decade off and on and then another one that specializes in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). I mention in the episode that I’m at the tail end of a 6-month, one-on-one DBT course and that has provided a lot of influence in this episode. I won’t list their names here because… somehow it feels weird to publicly list my therapist’s names on the internet?? Ha! Maybe that’s just my shame talking. Anyways, either way, I want to recognize the powerful influence these two women have had on me and on the contents of this episode. If you are local and searching for a great therapist, hit me up and I’ll share info! Thanks for listening. This is an important episode for me and one for which I am particularly proud.…
This week’s episode of Create Space is a current events story time! So often, I find that I read about something in the news but I don’t have the context or the understanding to fully grasp what’s going on. Beyond that, it’s hard to know what sources you can trust, what’s true and accurate, etc. I often wish I had someone who could just explain it to me like a story… in a way that makes sense. That’s how this idea came about. In the headlines recently was the Silicon Valley Bank collapse. Our expert guest today, Jason Forbes, is a risk analyst and has worked in the finance industry for more than 15 years. He currently works with Erste Group in Vienna, Austria. He has worked in English as well as German since 2007 in credit risk management, quantitative risk management, personal bankruptcy education, and consumer credit services. Jason holds degrees in finance from the United States and Europe. Jason and I discuss what it means for a bank to collapse, how it happened to Silicon Valley Bank and if we need to be worried about what’s to come. Enjoy the show? My guest today, Kaylee Lyda, embodies warmth, radiance and love. Those around her can’t help but feel embraced by her energy. However, she hasn’t always offered that same sense of compassion and acceptance to herself. She is going to talk with us today about how she learned to trust the process and find the deep self-compassion that has carried her through really dark times and brought her out on the other side where she could see the light. I bring you this episode with Kaylee to show you that there can be light at the edges of every darkness. You can show yourself compassion even when you aren’t performing or showing up in the world the way you think you’re supposed to. It IS a journey and trusting the process and trusting that you are being held even when it doesn’t feel like it can be all it takes to get you through the valleys and back up on the mountain top.
