In this episode Connor and I discuss his time at the Elliott School, what he's been up to since then, and how creativity has (and always will) played an active and integral role in every aspect of his life. We had way too much fun with this episode! In today’s episode of Create Space, I welcome Wichita State Senior Educator, Eric Wilson, to the show. Eric is a colleague of mine here in the Elliott School of Communication and an incredible teacher. Something I’ve noticed and admired about Eric is how he pays attention to more than just a student’s grade. He recognizes how important mental wellness is and also how challenging it can be for those of us in the communication industry. He plays an active role in teaching his students how to notice signs of burnout and how to maintain a healthy balance between their personal and professional lives. Eric doesn’t just talk the talk; he also walks the walk. He teaches self-compassion to his students and lives it in his own life, as well. In this episode, Eric will discuss how to foster a resilient mindset, take restorative breaks and manage stress.…

We’re back!! The fall semester is in full swing, and Create Space is back after a beautiful summer spending time at home with my kids. In today’s episode we’re going to make sense of the complex world of contentment. Join me as we explore the power of cognitive behavioral therapy, the concept of morally neutral behaviors, and the intriguing vertical and horizontal morality structures that influence our decision-making processes. We’ll start with a discussion on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a therapeutic approach that empowers people to identify and challenge negative thought patterns. We’ve talked about CBT on the show a few times before and we’ll definitely talk even more about it in later episodes. When it comes to storytelling, the stories we tell ourselves can simply not be understated. Next, I’m going to introduce you to the concept of morally neutral behaviors. This is something I learned from author, KC Davis. We’ll talk about the idea that not all actions are inherently good or bad. Understanding this concept can set you free from guilt and judgment, allowing you to make choices that feel right to you. Finally, we’ll turn to the intriguing concept of vertical and horizontal morality structures. We’ll discuss how vertical morality, often rooted in religious or traditional values, can clash with horizontal morality, which considers individual autonomy and societal progress. This is an episode that’s been on my mind for quite a while now and I’m excited to share it with you! Whether you’re feeling buried under a mountain of unattainable expectations or just wishing you could discover a deeper understanding of your own value system, this episode is for you.…
One of the biggest privileges of hosting this podcast is getting to interview current and former students of the Elliott School of Communication. This is a place that changed me for the better and grew me into the person that I am today and to get to honor that same experience in others is something for which I will be forever grateful. Today, I sat down with local videographer and content creator, Chase Dempsey. I met Chase several years ago as he was completing his undergraduate degree through the Elliott School and he went on to also complete his Master’s in Communication with us as well. Now, he works as a content creator for Bethel College and also runs his own videography company, Chase Me if You Can Productions. Chase creates magic for his clients every single day with his camera and I can’t wait to share his story with you! Want to work with Chase? (Believe me, you do.) Check him out on his website, Facebook or Instagram. Enjoy the show? Please subscribe so you don’t miss an episode. Want to send me some feedback? Check out this link to my Speak Pipe page. www.speakpipe.com/createspace Here, you can leave me a voice recording. It could be a question, a comment, a topic or an interview idea… anything at all. I might even share your voice message on air in a future episode! You can also catch me on Instagram @jessica.m.newman, Facebook or email me at jessicanewman629@gmail.com…
