Tech is amazing at helping us leverage our strengths for productive purposes. Organized people become more organized, social people become more social, and the doers of life get more done. Yet that same tech that allows us to truly shine in areas God has gifted us can be equally distracting, and even destructive, when our weaknesses show up. We can make more mistakes, faster than ever before. We can also put our trust in our amazing, God-given abilities and be tempted to believe that we can do good works on our strength. Those never end well. So today we'll talk about how we use the best tech well in the areas of our strengths, as well as our weaknesses, and remember together that our goal isn't to be productive, or even impressive, but to use all the tech that makes much of Jesus. Making friends in an internet age can be tough. Everyone is online (90+% of teens), and more than half of teens say they are online “almost constantly”. So how do we help our children make good friends? We start by teaching them what it means to be a friend: someone who is of equal value, a priority to you, and real world. Then we look at which tech best supports developing these friends, and which tech simply gives us an area of common interest and convenience, but which also makes us expendable rather than exceptional. Prioritizing isn’t one of my gifts. I’ve got great energy, I’m adaptable, and I can do a great job being present. Being prepared is another thing. While I’d love to justify my lack of planning on account of my spiritual superiority (I’m clearly a Mary, not a Martha), I have to acknowledge that we are called to count the cost of following Jesus. That’s not possible when I have no idea what is at stake. It’s easy to get busy, do good things, and miss making the most of the moments we are given. Yes, this applies to technology, but I’m mainly concerned with our day-to-day—those 16-18 waking hours each of us are gifted. Today we’ll discuss how to be intentional with our days, and some simple ways we can submit our busy calendars and hearts to our loving heavenly Father. “What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?" (Luke 11:11) I love to give my children good gifts. Whether it's a delicious treat, snappy new clothes, or a new game or toy, I love being able to provide my children with not only what they need but also what they want. Sometimes, however, my children ask for things that aren't good for them. It might be as simple as ice cream for breakfast, but sometimes what they ask for can hurt more than just their tummies. Today we discuss what it means to ask for, and receive, good gifts from loving parents. In the process we recognize that sometimes the most loving answer is "no". Show Notes: https://bit.ly/45axwd9…

Show Notes: https://bit.ly/3WIQoO1…

Drool Tech is designed to take our time, focus, and money. Not only does it manipulate our decisions, our investment includes the loss of opportunities we would have had if we'd been able to move on with real life. The loss of relationships, real world stress, and experiences of personal agency (you made a choice, saw the outcome, and learned from it), have made a brittle and anxious generation of youth and adults. Yet there is great hope. Today we'll look at how freeplay, agency, and healthy stress can help restore and reverse some of the damage Drool Tech has brought to old and young minds alike. There’s LOTS of stuff out there we could be doing. Many of those options are either morally neutral or even good (working out, time with friends, playing sports, serving at church). The question is, what will get your time this week, when push comes to shove, what falls off the table first? Sometimes we’re choosing our tech because it makes us feel important or we simply can’t stand being alone with our thoughts. Sometimes we choose being busy or being still and abiding, and many of us choose our tech as the go-to way to fill the void. Today we’re addressing five ways to use our tech on purpose and ensure our tech use is intentional as we head back to school. Show Notes: https://bit.ly/3PltkB6…

It’s time to prep our tech for school! We’re going to do this in three parts and spare everyone the 1+ episode this almost became. 🤪 We first need to assess our tech. We need to know: .📺 What tech are we using? .⏱ When and where are we using it? .🏥 Is it healthy? This first step provides a solid base for tech conversations and the beginning of tech wins with our family so that we can fight for our kids, not with them, when it comes to technology. All of us want to thrive, but what does it mean to do so in a tech world from a Biblical standpoint? I recently read a book where the author encouraged readers to “do today, thrive tomorrow”. At it’s core this is a beautiful reminder to "go to the ant, you sluggard" and prepare in times of plenty for times of need. That's both Biblical and wise. But when these ideas extend from the internet's idea of thriving, when it is the lynchpin in a conversation about reaching all God has for us, I take umbrage. This “best life now” language becomes our starting point and then we try to figure out how God fits into it. Let's be clear: Jesus didn’t come so we could become the best version of ourselves. He came that we might die to ourselves and live for Him. Today our conversation looks at what it means to thrive in a tech world, and how we can do so well with the days, and talents, God has gifted us. Show Notes: https://bit.ly/446TdZC…

How’s your tech going this summer? Summer comes with less structure, more free time, and different hours — generally we’re not waking our children up at 6am in the summer to get their rears in gear. A tech check-in takes just a couple minutes, and it is a great launchpad for positive tech conversations. Today we'll discuss how you can use three intentional questions to empower you to get those tech wins at home, no matter how healthy or unhealthy your tech is right now: Is my tech safe? Is it a good fit for my child? Does my child's tech make him or her look like Jesus? Show Notes: https://bit.ly/45506ve…

This is why Brent Dusing created TruPlay games, to be a light on purpose in a space where so many people go for purpose. You don't have to become a gamer to appreciate this. Each of us can think about what God has equipped us to do, what passions he's planted in our hearts, and how He might use our talents to spread the Good News and share the hope of the Gospel — maybe even in video games. Summer is busy, so I'm launching these Summer Session episodes to help get you useful encouragement while you enjoy the new rhythms summer has to offer. Today we discuss how what we listen to can help us focus on the things of the Spirit. I'll address three great podcasts, an audio book I've found incredibly helpful when it comes to focusing on the Spirit, and a reflection to make this week an intentional practice in living out Romans 8:5-8. 5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. This episode almost didn't happen. I rewrote it three times. I had to fully record it twice. I pray it'll be useful. I want to talk about whether our tech is helping us love God well, but at the heart of that conversation is a discussion about failure. God loves to use failure to achieve his purposes. He starts in 3:15 and hasn't looked back. He isn't scared by it, but he also isn't ok with it. If God could just ignore failure Jesus wouldn't be necessary. Instead God does something else: He uses failure. This matters in talking tech because most of our Drool Tech is aimed at getting around failure. Games give fail-proof adventures, social media gives fail-proof connections, and pornography gives fail-proof intimacy (no one has ever been turned down by porn). Yet that stuff can't bring us hope or peace, and some of it brings death to the very things we're hoping to nurture. Today's conversation looks at failure, how God uses it, and how we can use tech from hope and not for hope. It's ambitious, and I pray I pull it off.…

Do our children need social media? It might be the wrong question. There's lots of stuff we don't need but we still enjoy, and as loving parents we want to give them good gifts.
