22:46This conversation is taken from my video review of the Slate Electric Flosser. The company describes it as “the future of floss”. It’s listed online at $79.99 and comprises three elements - a flosser, a massaging gum sweeper, and a tongue scraper. I bought it and used it for six and a half weeks before I went for my routine dental cleaning appointment and got my dentist’s reaction (!). You can hear about that in my review video of the Slate flosser that’s now on YouTube. See my video review here: https://youtu.be/cN7whzlICnM As part of my review, I interviewed the company’s CEO and co-founder - Brynn Snyder. Fun fact: Her husband, Dr. Danny Snyder invented the Slate Flosser. Among my questions for Brynn, I asked about the alleged benefits in early users, the possibility of inadvertent gum trauma with the device, the potential benefit to waiting after eating before using the flosser, and what kind of feedback they’d had on the almost $80 price tag. I recommend you take a look at my video review on YouTube to hear what I feel were the pros and cons of my experience with the Slate flosser. And, find out what happened when I went to see my dentist after I’d been using the electric flosser for six and a half weeks. 🔸 Get 10% off using code GEMMA10 at the Slate checkout. This is not an affiliate code. ❗️ Transparency: I do not earn any money from sales of the Slate Electric Flosser. I paid for my Slate Flosser Starter Kit just like any other customer. The company sent me a replacement after I had a technical issue and I returned my original kit to Slate Dental (you’ll see that explained in my video review). 40:00The author of ‘Bumpin’ - the Modern Guide to Pregnancy’, Leslie Schrock, joined me for this special episode of healthHackers® to talk all about essential preparation for labor and delivery in a hospital setting. Leslie’s book has been described as the “new pregnancy bible” and came about because of her feelings of helplessness following several complicated pregnancies and losses. Bumpin’ was written in real time while Leslie was pregnant with her son TJ. Since then, she's had another baby - Dylan, who’s now three months old. Both birth experiences involved difficult and unexpected events. There was SO much I wanted to talk to Leslie about (the book covers conception all the way to postpartum and has been a resource for me in my own pregnancy) but for this episode we honed in on the key event that pregnant women (including me) spend a lot of time thinking about… the big moment, the showdown… the actual birth. Leslie covers: 🔹why she’s not a fan of birth plans 🔹medicated and non-medicated pain management 🔹how a barber’s comb became an effective pain reliever for Leslie 🔹benefits of a having doula and how to choose one 🔹how Leslie successfully reframed her fear of vaginal tearing (this technique will make you smile) 🔹the most helpful thing Leslie did during pregnancy to prepare for birth 🔹what she wished she’d known before her birth experiences 🔹the difference between Braxton Hicks and labor contractions 🔹how you’ll know when the baby is coming 🔹when to go to hospital 🔹back labor - what is it? 🔹handling the unpredictable Find Leslie: https://leslieschrock.com/ https://twitter.com/lesliejz https://www.instagram.com/lesliejz/ Thank you to the sponsors of this episode: https://glycanage.com/ See my review of the GlycanAge biological age test and details of your 15% discount here: https://healthhackers.org/handson/glycanage-biological-age-test To watch healthHackers® videos, including guest interviews and product reviews, head to the YouTube channel: youtube.com/HealthHackers For articles, podcasts, videos and product discounts 👉 https://healthhackers.org/ Common sense caution: healthHackers® is not personal or medical advice. 51:47Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and how to choose the way you feel about… anything. When I watched a video of psychologist Dr Debbie Joffe Ellis giving a presentation in which she suggested that anxiety, anger, and other emotions are a CHOICE, I knew I had to invite her to appear as a guest on healthHackers® so she could share with all of you (and me!) HOW we get to create our own emotions. Dr Debbie is a world-renowned expert in REBT. She spent years collaborating with her husband, the father and creator of REBT, Dr Albert Ellis, before he passed away in 2007. His work is understood to have helped lay the foundations for the well-known CBT; Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. One of Dr Debbie’s primary goals is sharing the techniques of REBT with everyone - not just teaching health care professionals. In her words, REBT “minimizes misery and maximizes joy, when the reality is that life probably will contain loss and suffering for most of us.” In episode 60, Dr Debbie covers: 🔹Why she describes REBT as “a no nonsense, no BS” approach 🔹Why it’s never about the event, it’s about the way you view it 🔹Key questions to challenge your own beliefs about any situation 🔹A demo of how to dispute irrational beliefs (using my upcoming childbirth as a real-life example!) 🔹Healthy and unhealthy anger 🔹Letting go of unhealthy anger aimed at another person because of something they did to you 🔹Unconditional self acceptance - even when you screw up 🔹What happened when Dr Albert Ellis first proposed the concept of REBT Learn more about Dr Debbie and find a free emotional self care and self help sheet on her website: debbiejoffeellis.com Follow her on Twitter: https://twitter.com/drjoffeellis Thank you to the sponsors of this episode: https://glycanage.com/ See my review of the GlycanAge biological age test and details of your 15% discount here: https://healthhackers.org/handson/glycanage-biological-age-test To watch healthHackers episodes as videos, head to the YouTube channel: youtube.com/HealthHackers For articles, podcasts, mini clips, health-tech review videos, guest episodes and to sign up for the newsletter 👉 https://healthhackers.org/ Common sense caution: Nothing on healthHackers® is personal or medical advice. 19:22While I was filming my review of the ZOE personalized nutrition plan recently (see video link below), I interviewed the company’s scientific co-founder, Professor Tim Spector - an epidemiologist from King’s College London, gut microbiome expert, and author who was also one of the first ever guests on healthHackers (see Episode 2!). Since Tim and I last recorded healthHackers together, his scientific progress through the study of personalized nutrition has grown by leaps and bounds. He also launched a COVID symptom study tracking app (currently used by over 4.5 million people), and released a groundbreaking new book - ‘Spoon-Fed: Why Almost Everything We’ve Been Told About Food is Wrong’. There was so much I wanted to talk to Tim about. So, after we finished filming his interview for my ZOE video review, he kindly agreed to stay on the call so we could record this quick additional episode for you. In Episode 57, Tim covers: 🔹his most shocking findings from the largest nutrition investigation of its kind 🔹the biggest mistakes we’ve been making to eat healthily over the past few decades 🔹the most significant factors that affect how your body responds to foods 🔹what highly processed foods with sweeteners do to your gut microbes 🔹why your fitness tracker’s calorie count is misleading 🔹how a high-carb meal was found to impact blood sugar levels the next day 🔹myth-busting the best time of day to eat 🔹what exercising can do to your blood sugar 🔹if processed meat has been linked to bad gut bugs - what about unprocessed meat? 🔹can we make any generalizations about healthy eating at all? 🔹why Tim aims to eat 30 different plants per week 🔹and, does diet make a difference when it comes to avoiding COVID-19? 34:17Can you prevent your child from developing a food allergy? How close are we to a ‘cure’ for allergies? And is our super-clean pandemic lifestyle causing problems for our children’s microbiomes that could make them more likely to develop allergies? Dr Tina Sindher is Clinical Assistant Professor of Allergy and Immunology in the Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine for the pioneering Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy and Asthma Research at Stanford University here in Silicon Valley. It’s where scientists are working hard on new therapies - including a lasting cure - for allergies and asthma. I’ve been longing for years to hear abut the ground-breaking work and clinical trials going on at the Sean N Parker Center, so it was a real privilege to speak to Dr Sindher on healthHackers. This episode also has a strong personal interest for me because I have a food allergy. Mine is to nuts. But don’t worry, I didn’t waffle on about myself all the time. 😊 Instead, we covered all of this… 🔹The role of diet, dirt and dogs (!) in reducing your risk of developing food allergies 🔹The link between laundry detergent and the rise of allergies 🔹Could too much pandemic cleaning make us more food allergic? 🔹Can a baby be born with an allergy or does it always develop after birth? 🔹Breastmilk; allergy prevalence and protective features 🔹How does a parent with food allergies introduce those foods to their baby? 🔹Top words of wisdom for new parents of allergic children 🔹Treatment developments; an allergy vaccine, patch, and mouth drops 🔹The reason a hospital trip is vital after using an Epipen or other AAI 🔹How close to a food allergy ‘cure’ are we? 🔹New studies into food allergies happening at Stanford right now 🔹Why do food allergies keep increasing? 🔹What does the future of allergies look like? Our discussion has inspired me to register as a participant for upcoming Stanford allergy clinical trials. I’ll keep you posted on that! 40:46Purely Obsessional OCD (Pure O) with psychotherapist India Haylor. Don’t believe obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is *only* about hand-washing, checking and tidiness. There’s much more to it, including a lesser known set of invisible symptoms referred to as ‘Pure O’. They can involve mental ruminations, going over memories to check them, arranging thoughts, and mentally assessing lots of “What if?” scenarios. There are many subtypes and themes; each deeply distressing to the person who cannot stop obsessing about them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ My special guest on healthHackers™ episode 54 is India Haylor - psychotherapist and founder of OCD Excellence. She’s been working in OCD for 17 years in both the UK and USA. India also has OCD - and the therapists she trains have had personal experience with it too (it’s part of the hiring criteria). ⠀⠀⠀⠀ In this episode, hear India discuss: ⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🔹how Pure O differs from the OCD you’ve previously heard about 🔹thought neutralizing, counting and ‘lucky’ numbers 🔹chewing, blinking, and other secondary subtype obsessions 🔹what does relationship OCD (ROCD) look and feel like? 🔹treatment methods for Pure O 🔹is it important for a therapist to spot Pure O versus traditional OCD? 🔹why therapists can struggle with if they’re not experts in OCD 🔹when India’s OCD started and how it manifested 🔹the positive aspects of living with OCD 🔹why India only recruits therapists who have personal experience of OCD Follow OCD Excellence on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ocdexcellence/ Visit the website: https://www.ocdexcellence.com/ OCD Action (UK): https://ocdaction.org.uk/ International OCD Foundation: https://iocdf.org/ To watch healthHackers™ videos, head to the YouTube channel: youtube.com/HealthHackers For articles, podcasts, mini clips, health-tech review videos, guest episodes and to sign up for the monthly newsletter 👉 https://healthhackers.org/ 🟥Common sense caution: Anything you hear or see within healthHackers content should not be considered personal or medical advice. 57:36Anxiety, ADHD, autism, and the role of nutrition and lifestyle factors. Dr Nicole Beurkens is known as one of the only clinical psychologists in the world with advanced degrees in nutrition and special education who has spent over 20 years helping families identify the root of their children’s behavior, attention, anxiety, or mood disorders - sometimes where other specialists have failed - using lifestyle solutions before medication. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ She’s also a mother-of-four, an award-winning therapist, a published researcher, international consultant, author of two books - and somehow still has time to lead a team of clinicians at her treatment center in Michigan. After learning about Dr Beurkens’ integrative work, I was really keen to interview her on healthHackers. When I was teenager, at least two practitioners linked my debilitating anxiety to fluctuating blood sugar levels. It resulted in a major dietary shift for me (and my family). At the time, we knew barely anything about possible associations between food and brain health. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In episode 53, Dr Beurkens shares her insights on: 🔹the rising number of childhood disorders 🔹why she looks for the root cause before prescribing psychiatric medication 🔹the real problem found to be affecting 40% of children diagnosed with ADHD 🔹the significance of the gut microbiome in child mental health 🔹nutrition solutions for improved child behavior 🔹the vitamin deficiencies that can affect behavior 🔹diet changes with the most success in her ADHD and autism patients 🔹when placebo pills have been found to work better than psychiatric medication 🔹the problem with disorder labels and misdiagnosis 🔹what is pandemic-life doing to children’s emotional and behavioral health? 🔹how your reaction to the COVID-19 crisis affects your child’s behavior 🔹and - how Dr Beurkens limits her children’s screen time (without an argument!) 23:06Back pain! 😩 One of the most common complaints affecting the majority of us at some point in our lives. Anyone else spend too long hunching over a laptop in early lockdown days? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Chat to someone who’s had a back issue and you’ll hear how daunting it can be. Maybe you’ve been told you have to lose weight to get rid of your back pain. There might be fears around surgery, inactivity, worsening injuries - you name it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So I wanted to do a #healthHackers episode with Dr Chelsea Matthews - a physical therapist, exercise specialist and former athlete who loves to nip back ache in the bud and resolve her clients’ pain WITHOUT resorting to surgery, injections - or ANY procedures that would mean they have to take time off work. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I had no idea there were so many myths around injuries until I found Chelsea. In this podcast, she debunks plenty of ideas about looking after your back that you’ve probably innocently believed for a long, long time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In episode 51, we cover: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🔹how Chelsea has helped hundreds of clients get out of pain and back to their workouts without injections or surgery 🔹tips for a healthy back 🔹is rest always the best first aid for an injury? 🔹things to know if you’ve been told you need to lose weight to be pain free 🔹is sleeping on your front bad for your back? 🔹you’ll likely get a disk protrusion one day - but that’s OK 🔹you must always sit up straight for a healthy back - true or false? 🔹staying on top of your mental health during recovery 🔹reframing pain 🔹plus, how strong our spines really are Chelsea’s website: https://www.catalystptp.com/ Her Insta: https://www.instagram.com/catalystpt/ Subscribe (for free videos) to the healthHackers YouTube channel: youtube.com/HealthHackers Read articles and see all videos at healthhackers.org 🟥Common sense caution: Anything you hear or see within healthHackers content should not be considered personal or medical advice.
