Psalm 119:1-24; 12, 13, 14; Amos 3:12–4:5; Matt. 21:23-32; 2 Pet. 3:1-10

“His appearing is as sure as the dawn; he will come to us like the showers, like the spring rains that water the earth.” –Hosea 6:3
I remember vividly the birth of each of my children. I stood at my wife’s side each time and waited for “that” moment. We knew without a doubt that a baby would be arriving. What drove me unbearably crazy is that we didn’t know the day or the time. God was the only one who knew and he left us unknowing. An expectant joy at the pending arrival of a new child accompanied the waiting.
There is another side to the relational equation and that is God’s waiting on us. Hosea expresses what so many of the prophets expressed—the longing and waiting of God for us to turn our hearts fully towards God, for us to ready ourselves for the imminent coming of God’s kingdom.
Advent is a time of waiting, expectantly and longingly. We wait with expectant joy to celebrate the birth of the one who changed our lives. We also wait for Jesus to put an end to all the pain that surrounds us. We do not know when our waiting will end, yet we know just as sure as the sun rises, that Jesus will come again and lead us into the larger life of his kingdom where he will be the living rain that will cause us to flourish. Let us join God in his waiting on us as we wait for him.
Thank you, Lord, for waiting on us. Help us to be faithful in our waiting for you. Your Kingdom come!
