E44: Christopher “KID” Reid from Kid ‘n Play: The Legacy of 50 Years of Hip Hop
Manage episode 407294277 series 3559303
Our guest today needs no introduction. John’s nostalgic vibes were turned up to eleven as he was joined by one-half of the legendary rap duo Kid n’ Play, the one and only Christopher “KID” Reid. From their beloved albums 2 Hype, Funhouse, and Face The Nation, to their classic films like House Party and Class Act, Kid n’ Play paved the way for cross-over hip hop stars like Nas, Ja Rule, and Eminem to diversify their talents and break into the Hollywood mainstream.
Despite the fact that KID has cut his iconic flat top fade, he is no less recognizable for his humor, love of the hip hop community, and passion for the art form. This year as hip hop celebrates 50 years of changing and challenging the culture, John and KID dive into the roots of Kid n’ Play’s music and their pioneering moves into movies, television, and animation. KID addresses some of the criticism that was thrown at the duo during the height of their success while pointing out how diversifying revenue streams and adjusting to shifts in style is now simply accepted as the norm in pop, hip hop, and rock.
This hour serves as both a hip hop history lesson and an inside look at how two friends from New York changed America's perception of hip hop and rap culture while operating on their own terms. Recently performing at the 2023 BET Music Awards in June of this year, the duo proved that they still have what it takes to get a party started and have no plans of slowing down anytime soon.
