This week John is excited to welcome Oliver Trevena to the Hollywood condo for a great talk about angel investing and the world of celebrity networking and influencers. Oliver is best known for hosting the popular Young Hollywood chat show which, at its height, was available in over 700 million homes in 24 languages. In addition, Oliver has worked in films with the likes of Bruce Willis, Nicolas Cage, Gerard Butler, and many many more. Over the years Oliver has slowly transitioned into more of an angel investor, advisor, and celebrity ambassador for brands such as Caliwater, All Saints, and Holi Scoops. This diversification in his talents has allowed Oliver to now treat acting as more of a hobby that helps to supplement his passions for brand building, investing, and product development.
In this chat, Oliver shares his journey, growing up in East Sussex, and his background in both British theater and dance. By unpacking the world of celebrity endorsements and investments, Oliver emphasizes the importance of focusing on the quality of the product and the team behind it, rather than relying solely on celebrity star power for products that may just be a trend. He advises fellow celebrities to stay in their lane and not micromanage the companies they work with saying, “In my eyes…a celebrity will influence you to try something once. The product is what's going to make you go back.”
In addition to discussing the many aspects of his investment portfolio, Oliver and John also discuss the concept of advisory shares in private companies while sharing their insights on a selective approach to joining such boards.
