The constitution of Kenya permits abortion when the life or health of the woman is in danger. Yet broad uncertainty remains about the interpretation of the law. Unsafe abortion remains a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in Kenya. Urban slums in Nairobi estimated the maternal mortality ratio in the slums to be 706 deaths per 100,000 live births with 31 % of these deaths being attributed to abortion complications
