A bit of a different one today. I wanted to explroe something that’s been on my mind, but not be glued to my desk (with my fancy microphone). So if you’re listening to this one, you’re on a walk with me. One of the things I pretty much always invite guys to do is to feel what’s happening in their bodies. The sensations that are happening in our bodies are pretty much always telling us something . How much access do we have to them? We’re not talking about emotions just yet—just the sensations in the body (e.g. tightness in my stomach, warmth on my face). What do you notice when you listen to this one? What happens for you when you hear the invitation to feel? I’d love to learn what’s happening for you. This one is far and reaching and was a lot of fun. Quick CW: brief mention of suicide ideation. Mike Joseph is the host and producer of the podcast Detoxicity, which aims to rewrite the code for what’s considered masculine in society. I was lucky enough to be featured on a recent episode (see the below link). Mike is also a mental health advocate, working alongside a variety of non profit organizations that intertwine mental wellness and music. Over the last three decades, he’s maintained a career in the music industry while also working as a journalist and radio personality. Mike was born in and is currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Our conversation moves between his experience of stepping into his own healing work to realizing he was polyamorous. We talk mental health, race, and getting outdoors. Like I said, far and reaching. CW: Themes of sexual violence and abuse. This is a different kind of episode from what I've done in the past. While I typically talk about male conditioning and issues around masculinity, this one is quite specific: talking about male survivors of sexual violence. Not perpetrators (though, as mentioned, there's often confusion around that), but survivors . My guest is my friend Jim Struve, the Executive Director of Men Healing , a non-profit dedicated to supporting men and male-identified folks who have survived sexual violence as children or as adults. Surprisingly, the data shows that about 1 in 6 men are such survivors. That's no small number. You'll hear about how Jim and his team (many of them survivors themselves) work with these men, helping them reclaim their lives and passions. We talk about why, although it's been useful, perhaps it's time to move on from the terminology of PTSD. Rejection. Or, at least, perceived rejection. How do you experience it? That’s where I went in this episode. First, however, I had to pay tribute to the fact that I’m hitting the three year anniversary of starting the men’s group that got all of this (points wildly around here inside The Bind) going. It was an impulse at the beginning of the pandemic, and it led me to this moment. The group is meeting for the first time in person, and we have had a lot of conversations about what it means to come off of Zoom and into the ‘real’ world. I met Thomas through a mutual friend, and immediately enjoyed the conversations we were having. He’s a Belgian therapist living in Portland, OR, and doing some similar things to what I’m working on here in in Seattle. We decided to just see where this conversation took us, and it went in some interesting (at least to me) directions. Most notably was the conversation about the decisions we make as boys to turn away from nurturing, caring, connecting friendships to join the pack. Who do we end up leaving behind? Work that is often about healing, about connecting to ourselves, about stepping into a different way of operating. Jeff Perera has been working on masculinity issues for over ten years. His analogy of the ‘ladder of masculinity’ is one of the best ways I’ve heard to describe what men in today’s world face (The guy is a master of stories and analogies). Happy New Year! I hope that you had a restful and easeful holiday season, no matter what you do—or don’t do—to celebrate. And I recognize that, well, for many it’s not a restful or easeful time of year. No matter, I hope you’re well. I decided to drop back into the foundations in a non-linear way. As non-linear as it gets. So, we discussed the body, and why it’s an important component for men doing healing work (I mean, it’s important for anyone doing healing work, but you get my drift). After recording this, I realized that I should probably note that I’m not a therapist, let alone a trauma specialist. I’m a student of this work, and have brought aspects of it into the work that I do, always with that caveat. If you’re in need of real trauma therapy, please do find an expert. As we move into the end-of-the-year, I decided that I wanted to come into this episode (mostly) without a plan, and to simply share some things that were alive for me. Fair warning (not to mention content warning), I do mention suicide. The loss of Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss last week really impacted me, and got me thinking a lot about how the first three foundations of this work (explored over episodes 2–4) really interweave with one another. As we’re in the darkest time of year—certainly with the least amount of sun, though dark in other ways for many—it’s all the more important to reach out for one another. I wanted to offer a brief meditation this time around to help us all focus in on our true, organic selves. You don’t have to be a guy to do it!
