When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. A few years ago, in a quiet room in London, I took a breath that changed everything. It was meant to be a simple trauma-release technique, but instead, something inside me shattered. I didn’t know why. I just knew that I had touched something deep—something raw and unresolved. That moment stayed with me for years, lingering in the background like an unanswered question. And then, just recently, during a group breathwork session, the truth finally surfaced. I had been carrying a grief I hadn’t even recognized. A weight I had never put words to. The space was held by two incredible men—grounded, authentic, and deeply committed to healing. Under their guidance, I finally let go. And in that release, I found something unexpected: clarity. That experience inspired the poem I’m about to share. It’s called *Breathing Through the Ashes.* It’s a reflection on grief—not just the pain it brings, but the way it reshapes us, teaches us, and, in its own strange way, helps us heal. Here it is.…
Pain often feels like living in hell—a relentless fire we instinctively try to escape. But what if the way out is through? In this episode of The Simon Schmid Podcast, I share a powerful poem, Through the Flames, that delves into the transformative nature of pain. Let this be a reminder: pain, as unbearable as it feels, carries within it the potential to set us free. This episode is for anyone seeking clarity, courage, and transformation in the face of life’s challenges. Tune in to discover how pain can become a pathway to growth and liberation.…
In this deeply personal episode on The Simon Schmid Podcast, I share a poem that captures the intertwined journey of the man I am today and the boy I once was. “The Man and the Boy” is a story of grief, trauma, and healing. It reflects on the wounds of a childhood marked by loss, pain, and silence, and the resilience required to rise from those ashes. Through the poem, I explore the relationship between my younger self—vulnerable and yearning for love—and the man I’ve become, determined to heal and reclaim a life of meaning and purpose. This episode is about more than my story; it’s about the universal truth that healing is possible. It’s about holding space for the broken parts of ourselves, learning to forgive, and finding strength in our shared humanity. I hope this poem resonates with you and inspires reflection on your own journey. Together, let’s rewrite the narrative and walk toward healing.…
Welcome to The Simon Schmid Podcast. In this episode, I’m sharing a poem inspired by four simple yet profound intentions: safety, happiness, kindness, and forgiveness. These words have become a cornerstone of my personal journey—reminders of what truly matters when life feels overwhelming. Writing this poem was deeply healing for me, and my hope is that it resonates with you too. “May I be safe. May I be happy. May I be kind. May I forgive.” Simple phrases, yet they hold the power to transform how we see ourselves and others. They remind us to soften in moments of tension, to choose love over fear, and to let go of what no longer serves us. As I share this poem, I invite you to reflect on these intentions in your own life. May they guide you toward greater peace, connection, and healing. Let’s begin.…
Welcome to The Simon Schmid Podcast. In today’s episode, I’m sharing something deeply personal—a poem I wrote about the art of letting go. These very personal poems have been an incredible source of healing for me, helping me navigate moments of pain and transformation. My hope is that they can offer the same for you—comfort, clarity, or even the courage to let go. Letting go can feel impossible at times. We clutch tightly to the stories of our past, replaying the “what ifs” and “whys,” as if holding on will somehow change the ending. But sometimes, the greatest act of love—for ourselves and others—is learning to release. This poem reflects that journey—how we carry the weight of our stories, how pain can become a strange kind of comfort, and how letting go isn’t about forgetting, but about finding freedom. So, as I read this piece, I invite you to reflect on what you might be holding onto—and whether it’s time to turn the page. Let’s dive in.…
