235: Help Men Feel Better with Paul Ronto
Manage episode 330061674 series 2150239
Three-time guest Paul Ronto (ep. 172 & 191) joins Chelsea 12:15 minutes in to talk about the journey toward his most daring and earnest adventure yet, starting his company Type3Life, a facilitated curriculum designed to teach men to live a Type3Life through wilderness adventure trips targeting motivation, self-growth, leadership skills, confidence, community, and a way to get past what’s holding them back.
With radical introspection and his classic dose of charisma and candor, Paul dives heart first into how he confronted the darkness and division within through couples therapy and a life altering diagnosis of Traumatic Brain Injury, freed himself from the ethereal feeling of not yet arriving with the help of the Paterson Center's 2 day intensive LifePlan, and pivoted 180 degrees within a year starting with outsourcing the overwhelm and the motto Just Say No. The short of it is, there’s no such thing as hoping to get better. You have to actively go do something to treat yourself and trust the people around you to help you—all of which requires talking about what’s troubling you.
We talk about All Of It. Following your passions is all about timing (15:00). Learning to be resourceful dumpster diving and living on $100/week (17:00—23:00). Dating with financial insecurity (28:45). Marrying, spreadsheets, and budgeting every cent. Wealth, not measured by millions, but by free time. Intentional dating can be valuable without being expensive (31:00). To wear a ring or not to wear a ring (43:30). Therapy, treatment, and transcendence. CTE, TBI, and Lexapro (40:00—1:01:00). Breaking down men’s mental barriers. First comes the physical challenge, then comes the bonding. The beer after the mountain bike ride. The car ride home after a hard day skiing. When you’re happy where you are, giving yourself permission to coast. Letting the air out. Real winners celebrate small wins. Fun, freedom, and fearing less. Revamping your inner dialogue. The limiting beliefs within suicidal thoughts (1:07:00). Dropping the bright light to let the human side rush in. The relief in being relatable. When someone asks how you are, tell them (1:09:00). Tricking wives into believing you're never not winning (1:17:30). The journey is the goal (1:36:00). What it means to Breakupward (1:43:00) and live a Type3Life of fun (1:45:00).
